Can you send a quick email calling for strong nature laws?
Right now, the Albanese government is making the most important changes to our national environment laws in a generation.
What’s decided in the next few weeks could lock in the rules that govern nature protection for decades.
That’s why it’s so important Labor MPs and Senators hear directly from the people they represent.
Tips for writing your email
Make it personal: We’ve drafted some text to get you started, but your email will be most powerful if you add your own voice. Share why you care about strong environment laws: is there a local forest, grassland, river, or species you want protected? Do you worry about climate impacts in your community?
Focus on the asks – While there are many issues with the current EPBC Act, and many reform priorities, right now we think it's most effective for Labor MPs and Senators to hear the call for:
- With strong National Environmental Standards and rules
- That protect nature from climate harm
- That protect nature from deforestation
- An independent EPA
You can read more detail about these asks in this explainer.
Keep it clear and respectful: Decision makers are more likely to listen if your message is strong, concise and courteous.
Remind them who they represent: Labor’s landmark election win was because communities backed them in, not industry lobbyists. MPs and Senators need to hear that communities expect them to deliver strong laws that protect nature – not loopholes or spin.

WHY THIS MATTERS
The biggest environmental policy moment of our time
Our national nature laws are failing. Extinctions are sky rocketing, deforestation is rampant, and our laws aren't properly addressing the climate crisis.
After failing to get reforms across the line before the 2025 federal election, the Albanese Government is back, re-elected, and under fresh pressure to deliver on its promise to fix our failing nature laws.
This time, the reform process is moving fast – and out of sight. So far there's no community consultation. Leaks to media, but little transparency.
Governments don’t make strong laws in a vacuum – they respond to pressure.
Industry and other lobby groups are already active in the reform process – the public voice must be just as strong.
By emailing your local representatives, you’ll show decision makers you're watching closely – and won’t settle for weak reforms dressed up in good headlines.
