Australia’s nature laws are meant to protect the places and species we love – but right now, they’re failing.

With the Albanese Government moving fast to finalise reforms to the EPBC Act, what happens in coming weeks could lock in the rules that govern nature protection in Australia for decades. 

Will we finally get environment laws that address climate change? Will they close the logging loopholes and end deforestation? Will approval decisions stay in the hands of politicians, or will we create a truly independent, science-backed body – like an EPA – to enforce the rules and hold decision makers to account?  

Consultation has been limited. Industry voices are loud.  

There’s a real risk that reforms will prioritise speed and “streamlining” over people and nature.  

This is a critical moment to regroup, refocus, and make sure the next version of our national environment laws delivers real protection, – not just rubber stamps for destruction.
