Environmental Justice Australia is alarmed by reports this morning that the Albanese government is nearing a deal with the Coalition to pass long-overdue environment law reforms. This deal could leave key decisions in the hands of politicians, not an independent EPA.
Nicola Rivers, environmental lawyer and Co-CEO of Environmental Justice Australia said:
“It’s unfathomable that in 2025, Australia could pass new environment laws that ignore climate change and keep politicians in charge of approvals.”
“For far too long, our laws have permitted destruction instead of preventing it. Strong standards, a ‘quick no’ for irreversible harm, and an independent EPA are the backbone of real reform.”
“You can’t fix nature laws while turning a blind eye to deforestation. Any deal that leaves logging and land clearing loopholes in place will fail the environment and the community.”
“After years of delay, the government has one chance to get this right. This should be the generation that turned the tide on extinction and climate destruction – not the one that signed off on more of the same.”
