EJA response to collapse of negotiations on EPBC laws

Ellen Maybery, Environmental Justice Australia senior specialist lawyer, says:

‘The Albanese government went to the last election promising to make our nature laws work better for environmental protection. They have broken their promise.’

‘As environmental lawyers who work with these laws every day, we know they are broken and urgently need reform.’

‘Today is a heartbreaking day for the many concerned Australians – nature lovers, scientists and farmers – who pushed for these much-needed reforms over many years and feel deeply disillusioned.’

‘People care about nature and need it in their lives. We’re in a climate and extinction crisis and the lack of government action is unacceptable.’

‘Sensible reforms were suggested and a political pathway offered a good way forward. But these were refused by the Albanese government. It’s a missed opportunity for nature.’

‘This is unfinished business, and all parties needs to make it their priority. We will continue to push for sensible and essential reforms to address the climate and extinction crises, protect critical habitat and uphold community and First Nations rights.’
