A special message to the EJA community from Christine Carlisle, President of the Environmental Council of Central Queensland – the volunteer group EJA lawyers represented in the Living Wonders climate cases.
What a week.
I’ll admit: it took a while to process last week’s High Court decision, where our special leave application for the Living Wonders climate cases was refused.
The disbelief was swift. The grief and sadness came in more slowly. We are heartbroken that this is the end of the road for this phase of the journey we have been on for over two years.
Yet, alongside all that grief and disappointment, there has been something else. A lighter, warmer feeling.
Gratitude.
We feel deep gratitude for the support of thousands of people like you right across this continent. For your commitment to standing by us, whether right from the start, or any time since. Your willingness to write submissions, join us at webinars, donate to our legal fund, spread the word far and wide.
We have never been in this alone.
And that solidarity is what the Living Wonders climate cases are all about. They are about every living wonder at risk across this continent. They are about all of it, and all of us, and this big, beautiful world we are part of.
So – while it has been an emotional, exhausting journey, one that ended in a disappointment we hoped we’d never experience, it has been your support that has kept us going.
We recorded this message on the afternoon we received the decision. We hope it conveys even a fraction of the gratitude we feel for everyone who has stood by us.
From the bottom of our hearts, and for all of our living wonders:
Thank you.
