The Department of Primary Industries released a Draft Report on Victoria's primary logging law, the Sustainable Forests (Timber) Act 2004. The Report recommended wide changes to the Act, which aim to make it easier to log in Victoria's native forests.
We made a submission on the Draft Report on 1 October 2012.
In summary, we submitted that the Draft Report:
- Undermines the idea of sustainable forest management, which is principle on which the Act is founded.
- Removes key government oversight of loggers.
- Fails to address the many long-standing failures in the environmental protections that apply to logging.
