The Department of Primary Industries has released a report recommending changes to streamline Victoria's principal logging law, the Sustainable Forests (Timber) Act 2004.
We have concerns about the recommended changes. This is not only because they are premised on the need to entrench rather than find alternatives to logging in our native forests, but also because they seek to do so by removing government oversight of the industry's environmental impacts.
We have prepared a Briefing Note to explain what the proposed changes are, and what the implications could be for environmental protection, and to assist you to make your own submissions.
Submissions are open until 1 October 2012.
