This paper highlights the critical need for an independent body that has oversight of nationally important environmental issues.
Public confidence in environmental decision-making and the administration of Australia’s environmental laws is low. Australia needs an independent national environmental watchdog – a National Environment Commission – to ensure strong and effective protections are in place across Australia to defend Australia’s unique environment.
This paper also looks at proposed role, functions and governance arrangements, as well as experiences in other jurisdictions.
