After considerable anticipation, the Victorian Government announced its policy proposals for the future of the Yarra River (Birrarung) on 26 February 2017. For many people and organisations this was the culmination of much work, endeavour, care and skill.
There are substantial affinities between what was proposed by Environmental Justice Australia, the Yarra Riverkeeper Association and our community collaboration, and what has been proposed by the Yarra River Protection Ministerial Advisory Committee and endorsed by Government. This paper looks at the MAC Final Report and considers the announced recommendations and outcomes in light of what were, in our view, priorities for a new, innovative law.
