Save our unique savanna ecosystems

The Northern Territory’s tropical savanna is a national treasure. With sweeping orange plains and eucalypt woodlands home to scurrying marsupials and vibrant birds calling from the canopy. We have some of the largest intact savanna remaining on earth.

But our savanna is in crisis. Like the Great Barrier Reef, it’s a vital ecosystem that’s literally collapsing before our eyes.

Now, land clearing poses a new threat – the cotton industry plans to rapidly expand in the Northern Territory. Already, Northern Territory land clearing permits have skyrocketed by 300% in just the last few years, and the impact has been devastating.

It doesn’t have to be this way. Under our federal environment laws, Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has the power to step in and prohibit land clearing that threatens endangered plants and animals. Traditional Owners have cared for savanna Country for tens of thousands of years. But they’re seeing vast swathes of their Country cleared without their consent.

Will you sign this petition and call on the Minster to enforce the laws we already have, and stop unassessed, unrestricted land clearing of our woodland savannas?

Our savanna is too precious to lose. Together we can show Minister Plibersek that people from all corners of the continent are joining together to protect the NT’s savanna, before it’s too late.
