The Victorian government is currently consulting on reform to the State’s main law protecting nature – the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act (FFG Act).
The FFG Act is in need of fundamental reform.
There are some proposals in the recently released consultation that could help to improve implementation of the FFG Act. But the government’s proposals do not go far enough. The consultation paper also suggests that important elements of the FFG Act will be removed – in particular ‘the Guarantee’ and requirements for mandatory threatened species action statements.
Join us in urging the government to reconsider those key elements of the consultation before reform is further progressed. Your submission could help to ensure that this once-in-a-generation opportunity to improve the law protecting Victoria’s threatened species can be realised.
The consultation has recently been extended and submissions now need to be in by 28 March 2017.
We have summarised the government’s key proposals and our views on them in our briefing paper here. You can use this to guide your submission.
